Home Depot Confirms Security Breach – Identify if Your Card is at Risk

Posted on Tuesday, September 9, 2014

We shared early details of a potential card security breach at Home Depot on September 4th. Since that time, Home Depot has confirmed the breach, which potentially impacts anyone who shopped at a U.S. or Canadian Home Depot Store since April 2014. The full Home Depot statement, FAQ and a link to sign up for free credit monitoring can be read here.

In their statement, Home Depot states that “while the company continues to determine the full scope, scale and impact of the breach, there is no evidence that debit PIN numbers were compromised.” While that is good news, as noted security expert Brian Krebs reports, several institutions are already seeing “a steep increase over the past few days in fraudulent ATM withdrawals on customer accounts.” Card numbers are being used to create counterfeit cards, allowing the purchase of merchandise at big box retailers. In many cases, perpetrators are manipulating systems to change the PINs on those counterfeit cards and therefore gaining access to cash via ATMs.

As we previously indicated, we are monitoring this situation closely and will take steps to ensure the cooperative’s risk to loss is as contained as possible. However, we highly encourage members to take proactive steps to keep fraud from happening on their accounts.
