Redefining Wealth: Building a Life Beyond the Numbers
Wealth is about how fully you get to live your life, not only how much money you have stashed away.
When most of us hear the word “wealth,” our minds jump straight to numbers—account balances, investment portfolios, or that elusive “someday” figure we hope to reach.
But wealth has never been only about how much money you have stashed away.
It can mean booking the trip you’ve dreamed about for years.
Spending more time with the people you love.Saying yes to dinner, concert tickets, or a weekend away because you made room for joy in your budget.
Getting to live your life fully, with more freedom and choice? That’s wealth, too.
The Trap of Chasing “More”
It’s easy to slip into the mindset that wealth is always somewhere ahead of us. But if we only define wealth as a number, the goalpost will continue to move and we’re less likely to be satisfied, even if we catch up to it.
- When you were younger, maybe still in school or just starting your career, did you imagine you’d feel secure at an arbitrary salary—once I make $80K, I’ll be set—only to raise the bar as soon as you got there?
- Have you ever bought something you thought would bring happiness, only to feel the same restlessness a few weeks later?
That’s the trap: chasing numbers instead of noticing the life those numbers are supposed to support.
A New Definition of Wealth
Wealth is personal, and it’s worth taking time to define what it means to you.
Maybe it’s the peace of mind that comes from knowing your needs are met. Maybe it’s having time and energy for the people and passions that light you up. Maybe it’s feeling prepared for what life brings, or having enough margin to give generously through money, time, or kindness.
For most of us, it’s a combination of these things and more.
When we define wealth for ourselves, it shifts from an arbitrary finish line into a practice. A way of living.
A Small Step to Try This Week
Take a moment to step away from the numbers. Instead, ask yourself:
- What three things in my life make me feel truly wealthy—without spending a dime?
(Examples: taking PTO without feeling guilty, playing with your kids, a favorite hobby, good health, community support.) - How can I protect or nurture those things through my financial choices?
(Examples: Prioritizing health-related spending, setting aside savings for family experiences, or simplifying expenses to gain more time freedom.)
Money works best when it helps protect what you value most.
Living Richly, Right Now
Wealth doesn’t begin the day your account hits a certain number. It begins the moment you start building your money around the life you’re actually trying to live.
So, ask yourself: when you picture a truly “wealthy” life, what do you see? And how can your money serve that vision—starting today?
